Solid Hardwood Flooring:

  • Installation:
    • Can only be installed on or above ground level (on & above grade) to prevent moisture from seeping into your wood floor.
  • Subfloor:
    • Requires a wood subfloor.
  • Pros & Cons:
    • Lifespan: You will be able to refinish your floor as many times as you like increasing the overall lifespan of your floor.
    • 100% Natural: Because the floor is a natural product is will respond to environment changes meaning, even after the floor is installed, the flooring will expand and contract based on the temperature.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring:

  • Installation:
    • Can be installed in any room in the house including your basement and other below grade applications.
  • Subfloor:
    • Can be used with multiple subfloor types including wood and concrete slabs
  • Pros & Cons:
    • Change Resistant: Constructed of multiple plies engineered flooring is much more stable and resistant to change preventing it from changing size after installation.
    • Ease of Installation: Engineered flooring can be nailed or stapled down, glued and in some cases even floated over existing floor cutting time off your project.
    • Selection: Because engineered flooring generally requires less species specific material many more color and species options are available.

Wood Species

Selecting the right wood species is key in assuring that your completed project is exactly as you want it to be.

Wood species are generally separated into two distinct groups, Classic / Natural and Exotic. While the natural group tend to have a more classic pure wood look the exotics will generally have much richer and deeper colors that bring out the characteristics in the wood. Choosing the species of wood you would like is arguably the most important decision you will make about your new floor so choose wisely.

Want some additional assistance in selecting the right species for your application? Give us a call and tell us what you are looking to achieve and we will help guide you to the floor that is perfect for you.

Primary Color

Looking for a brown-ish or orange-ish floor but not sure how you\'re ever going to find it? We\'ve put all of our flooring into basic color groups that make it easy to find any "ish" you\'re looking for.

Combining a "Primary Color" selection with one from our "Shade" group is the fastest way to find the exact floor you\'re looking for.

Wood Surface

The surface type of your wood is easily the first thing you will notice about your floor outside of the color. Each of the different surface types posses attributes that make them very very different form one another, but in the end, what type of surface type is right for your project is entirely about aesthetic preference.

High Surface Variation

  • Distressed
    • Distressed surface flooring is designed to mimic the use and age of authentic reclaimed flooring without going too overboard.
  • Handscraped
    • Handscraped flooring continues to trend up in popularity, becoming more prominent in American homes and commercial applications. These products will have a surface with obvious yet smooth peaks and valleys that make the hand applied surface texture very evident in your floor.

Low Surface Variation

  • Embossed
    • Embossed flooring can sometimes look like handscraped however it is a little different. Embossed floors take the normal look and feel of the wood and cover it with a protective yet thin coating that maintain the natural look and feel of the wood while giving it a medium to high gloss finished look. This is a good option if you want to be able to see and feel the natural character of the wood but handscraped has a little too much texture for you.
  • Smooth
    • Smooth flooring is exactly what it sounds like. Smooth flooring will have a clear or stained finish layer applied to it that keep the look but not the feel of the wood. It can also have a somewhat muting effect on the flooring.

Installation Methods

Some installation methods are easier than others. And some you may already be equipped for and not even realize it.

  • Click Lock / Lock and Fold:
    • Click lock or lock and fold installation systems are among the easier installation processes. You simply lay the flooring down over your underlayment and the locking technology holds them in place for you.
  • Glue Down:
    • If you are considering a glue down installation you will need some adhesive, also called mastic, and a trowel. You will want to select an adhesive that is recommended by the manufacturer, failure to do so may void your flooring warranty.
  • Floating:
    • Sharing elements of both a glue down and click lock style installation, floating your floor is a fast way to secure your new floor to either your existing floor or subfloor. In this method you will lay the pad and apply adhesive to the tongue and grooves or click lock sections of the floor.
  • Nail / Staple Down:
    • With both nailing and stapling you will benefit from the use of a pneumatic tool. The size of the staple or nail you will need to use is dictated by the thickness of the floor.

Installation Location

Not all flooring can be installed in sub ground level applications. Use the "Installation Location" narrowing group if you plan on installing your new flooring in below-grade (basement / sub-surface) application.

Gloss Level

Selecting a level of gloss plays a slightly larger role than just, "how \'shiny\' my floor is." The level of gloss is often also a good indication of how easy it will be to clean and maintain.

  • Low Gloss:
    • Hides scratches and other scuffs much better
    • Easier to repair
    • Easier to keep natural look of floor
  • High Gloss:
    • Most common in commercial settings
    • Highlights imperfections such as dust and scuffs requiring more frequent cleaning

Character Variation

The Character Variation group enables you to filter down to flooring that looks exactly like you want. If you\'re looking for something that has a lot of alternating color and is striking in nature you will want to select something with a higher Character Variation. If your goal is a much less intrusive look then you might want to select something with a lower variation. No matter which way you go you\'re sure to find exactly what you\'re looking for.

Color Name

Each of the color names here are defined by the hardwood manufacturer. If you are looking for a specific manufacturer color you can use this to narrow down quickly to the specific group of products you are searching for.

If you are unsure of the specific color name you may have more success using the "Primary Color" narrowing group.

Width

The width of the flooring is sometimes underplayed but has a dramatic effect on the look of your flooring. Whether you are looking for standard size planks, something a little wider or even thinner, choosing your desired width should be one of the first steps in your flooring project.

Mixed Width Flooring

Flooring designed to be installed in a mixed width method can be identified by selecting one of the widths you would like to see in the kit or by selecting the mixed width option

\r\n
Width

Length

The length of your hardwood flooring planks, although lending to the overall appearance of the floor, is less important of a selection than the width. Because the planks will line up end to end, the transition from one plank to the next will be less obvious from standing height. You may want to keep in mind that longer planks mean more square foot coverage per plank and mean less installation work. Something that is always good to keep in mind whether you are installing the flooring yourself or having a professional do it for you.

Janka Rating

The "Janka Scale" is a chart that assigns a hardness value based on the materials resistance to force making it an easy way to quickly identify a materials potential durability.

Many times people will mistake a higher Janka rating for an extremely durable floor. While it is true that the higher the rating a product received the harder the material is the finish will be a much larger contributor to the overall durability of the flooring.

For more information on the "Janka Scale" please see our article center.

Type of Edge

The edge type is important when deciding the overall look that you are trying to achieve with your new flooring.

  • Beveled
    • Beveled edges will dip where the planks meet providing a much more dramatic line
  • Micro-Bevel
    • Minimized version of the beveled edge
  • Squared
    • Squared edges are designed to allow adjacent planks to be flush with each other minimized the visibility of the line between each piece
  • Sculpted
    • Sculpted edges are hand sculpted to a smooth finish and provide a natural looking finished product

Why don't we show the price?

Like many retailers, Floormall.com can choose to set its own prices independently. And even though manufacturers require Floormall.com and other retailers to display a product's "minimum advertised price" (or MAP), the retailer can choose to sell for less than that. But the price must be conveyed in other ways, and each individual manufacturer's MAP policy determines where the price can be seen.

To see the price for this product at Floormall.com, you'll need to place it in your shopping cart, and maybe even proceed to final checkout. If you're not ready to buy the product, simply remove it from the cart.

Floormall.com apologizes for any inconvenience. We'd just like to offer you the chance to save extra money while we adhere to manufacturers' MAP policies. Floormall.com is also working to educate manufacturers on how their policies impact customers and their buying behavior.
