Ohio has a continental climate in most of the state, save for the very southern portion which is subtropical. This part of the state is home to several kinds of subtropical plants which cannot survive in the northern part of Ohio. There are a few types of severe weather that homeowners have to be aware of. Tornadoes are known to touch down in Ohio and earthquakes are rare but not unheard of. During the winter the state sometimes receives heavy snowstorms due to its proximity to Lake Erie.
