There have been many different types of flooring on display here but today we’ll go over the types of hardwood flooring featured at the moment: engineered and hand scraped.

Engineered Hardwood flooring is a mix of natural hardwood and laminate flooring. And it does a good job of utilizing both of the allures and strengths of each type of flooring.

Engineered hardwood flooring is usually more expensive than laminate flooring. But while laminate flooring mimics a specific type of natural hardwood, it isn’t actually that wood. Engineered is made much like how laminate flooring is but has one significant difference. The top layer of laminate flooring is made from a photographic layer of whatever surface it is mimicking such as natural wood or stone tile. The top layer of engineered hardwood flooring is the actual wood. This gives the home the authentic feel of having real hardwood floors installed.

While one of the main factors that homeowners choose engineered hardwood flooring over laminate flooring is because of the authentic hardwood appearance, one reason why engineered hardwood is chosen over natural hardwood is because of its stability. The reason for this stability can be seen in the way that this type of flooring is made. Several layers of plywood, between three to ten pieces, are pressed together under extreme pressure. Naturally, the more layers the more durable that specific composite plank will be. Bonding these layers together gives the flooring very good stability and durability. And specifically, it makes it more resistant to moisture and temperature. When natural hardwood floors are exposed to moisture or adverse heat they tend to warp. With engineered hardwood flooring warping is less likely due to the composite layers reinforcing each other and resisting warping. This allows you to place engineered hardwood flooring in areas that will see low levels of moisture, such as bathrooms and basements, since it can be placed directly over concrete. This makes engineered hardwood flooring a reliable choice in humid, hot climates.

Hand scraped, or distressed hardwood flooring, is a unique flooring choice. Hand scraping hardwood flooring is done to intentionally give the floor an imperfect look. The hardwood flooring is gouged and nicked and basically given the look of a much older floor. Doing this gives the floor a more lived in, rustic look. It’s a popular design choice in homes with old world, southwest or country decor.

Distressing hardwood flooring also makes it more durable. Furthermore, scratches and other dings will not show nearly as well. The floor is very low maintenance and is a good choice for homeowners with children or a lot of foot traffic.

Different techniques are used when distressing hardwood flooring and they can range from scraping the wood with copper wire or finishing a floor so each saw mark is easily visible. Like most hardwood flooring there are many options to choose from. You can check out FloorMall’s Hardwood Blowout section. This is where we’ll have a selection of high quality, limited time discounted engineered and hand scraped hardwood flooring.
